Fun Foam Frames

Yesterday I went to Michael's to browse.  I wasn't looking for anything in particular.  It was my lucky day.  I ran across this package of foam frames.  There are 24 in a package.  Guess what!?  It was on sale for $3.19.  That is just over 13 cents per frame.

Here are the four different shapes that came in the package.

I really like these because the frames are already put together with a space left open for you to slip the picture in.  You can have the students decorate the frames with fun foam shapes, permanent markers, jewels, glitter glue or even puffy paint.

My favorite part of is this....
...there is a magnet already attached to the back!  I love it!

I picked up 4 packages.  I can't wait to use them as parent gifts.

Staples Shocker

On several other blogs I read that that teachers do not have the normal limits on sale items at Staples.  I had never heard this before so I went and tried it out this afternoon.  They were right....instead of the limit of 2 items on the one cent deals there was a limit of 25!  All I had to do was give them my Staples teacher card and my school ID.  I couldn't believe it!  As I was loading my cart up I began to feel guilty.  After the guilt feeling left I felt like a hoarder.  Have you ever seen the show Hoarders?  Anytime I watch it I have the sudden urge to clean.  I am by no means a hoarder but I felt like one today.  Instead of getting my limit of index cards, pencil and highlighter I only picked up 20 packages of pencils, 14 packages of index cards and 15 packs of highlighters.  There is a minimum purchase of $5 so I picked up 2 packs of stickers.  At the risk of feeling like a hoarder, quick.......run to Staples and take advantage of this great sale!

Flat and 3-D Shapes

I created this to use with the pocket chart I picked up from the Target Dollar Spot.  Speaking of Target I am about to brave the heat wave and see if there is anything new at the Dollar Spot that is a must have.  If I find anything I will definitely post it here.

Back to the pocket chart activity.  I plan making this a very easy activity by cutting a different line (straight, zig zag, rounded, etc.) between each shape word and the shape.

Candy Container: Alphabet Game

Remember this candy container?  I was looking for idea for how to use it.
I used the same candy pieces from the sight word game I made but this time I used upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.  Here i what I came up with in addition to the "Oh no!" pieces.

Popcorn Numbers

Here is another way to use your popcorn containers.  This time instead of words or the alphabet the students identify the numbers.

Popcorn Alphabet

I picked up a few plastic popcorn containers earlier this year to use with a popcorn sight word game.  I was thinking about the beginning of the year yesterday and decided to make an alphabet game.  Print, laminate and cut the piece of popcorn out.  You can either put just the uppercase letters in the container, just the lowercase letters or both depending on what skill you are working on.  Students pick a letter and say it's name.  If they get it correct they get to keep it.  If they get it incorrect they put it back.  The student with the most letters at the end of the game wins.

Candy Game (Part 2)

After a suggestion I created a second "Oh no!" page using the same candy as the sight words to go with the candy game I posted earlier today.

Oh no candy

Candy Game

First I want to say thank you for all of your suggestions on how to use the candy container.  I found some candy graphics and a tooth graphic.  On the candy graphic I put my school system's Kindergarten sight words.  On the tooth I put the phase "Oh no!".  If a child chooses a piece of candy and can read the word they keep it.  If they choose a tooth they have to put all of their pieces of candy back in the candy container.

Candy Container

I picked up a container at the Target Dollar Spot a few weeks ago.  It is cute but I don't really know what kind of game to create for it.  If you can make a suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Link Activities-Update

I decided that I didn't like the size of the squares for my link activities so I made them bigger. Here are the adjusted activities.

Dice Games for Home

A few years ago we had a math night where parents and students came to school and played math games together.  We sent home copies of all the activities so the families could continue playing them at home.  One the activities used dice.  Each family received a pair of dice.  We picked the dice up from Dollar Tree.  There were 5 or 6 pairs of dice in each package.  Here is the dice game suggestions that went with the dice.

Links: Counting from 1 to 30

Here is another activity to use with your links.  This time students put the numbers from 1 to 30 in order.

**If you need a refresher or have no clue what I am talking about click here to read about word activities using links or here to see an example picture using letter to make words instead of numbers.**

Dollar Spot at Target (Part 3)

Before I tell you about my latest and greatest finds at the Dollar Spot I want to tell you about what else I picked up at Target.  I printed a $1 off coupon for Sharpies and a $1 off coupon for Paper Mate pens.  Target has the Sharpies (see picture below) on sale for $1 which means you get them for FREE!  The pens were $1.02 regular price which means I got them for $.02.  What a deal!  Head over the target.com and print your coupons!

Back to the Dollar Spot finds....

I am going to use these "Push Pencils" as prizes.  They come 10 in a pack.

I finally tracked down the number stamps that everyone has been talking about.  I wish they were only a dollar but $2.50 isn't a bad price if you compare the cost to the numbers stamps you find at teacher stores.

I picked up 3 packs of glitter pom poms but I don't know what I am going to use them for yet.

Finally I picked up  a couple of two packs of gift bags as well as some wrapping paper.  This is not for school but personal use because I can never pass up a bargain.

Goal Setting/Data Notebooks

Empowering Kinders! And Other Kids Too! is having a goal setting with early learners linky party and I have decided to join the party!

We have data notebook we use with our students. Each student has their own data notebook that they are assessed once a month. We use a different color highlighter each month to mark the items they know.  For example, yellow for September and blue for October and so on.  I make a pie chart to display the data on in our data center bulletin board using the Graph Club program on our computers. For example, if we are doing counting to 100 I would set up ranges 1-25 (red), 26-50 (yellow), 51-75 (green) and 76-100 (blue). The pie chart does not show student's names, just how many students fall into each range. Above each pie chart I place our goal.  The kids love how we work as a class to try and make the entire circle blue. I set individual goals with each child.

I wish I had some data center pictures with me but I don't.  I do have a copy of "Our Goal" that goes above each of the pie chart on the data center bulletin board as well as my data notebook to share with you.

Dollar Tree Buys

I went to Dollar Tree this morning and found a few things for my classroom.  I love Dollar Tree!  Here is what I picked up.

I picked up die-cut letters in two different sizes, 2 inch and 4 inch.

This is a simple United States puzzle.

Here is an alphabet puzzle.  I wish they also had a lowercase letter puzzle but I didn't see one.

I really like this number puzzle.  I think I might remove the numbers and  put stickers under the numbers so they can match the number to the set.

I was very excited to see these spinners.  I was even more excited when I realized there are 4 spinners in a pack.  There are 25 pockets (5 different colors) which they call "organizational envelopes".  Finally I picked up a two pack of Scotch tape.  Who can pass up a two pack for $1?

Links: Counting from 1 to 20

I have posted several link activities for building words and one for counting by 10s to 100.  Here is one where students count from 1 to 20 using links to link the numbers together.  If you need to see what I am talking about here is a link to a post I made that has a picture of what the linking looks like.  I hope this isn't too confusing.

Classes, Classes and More Classes!

The economy is so bad.  My school system hasn't given us our steps or COLAs in several years.  The only way I was going to be able get a raise was to get 9 more credits this summer in order to change salary lanes.  Guess what!?  I did it!  I just finished my third 3 credit class!!!  I am so excited.  I took a phonic class, a reading materials class and finally a real world math class.

I am curious....when was the last time you received a raise?

Dollar Spot at Target (Part 2)

I went to a different Target this morning to check out the Dollar Spot.  I found a few things but I must say I am disappointed overall.  The differences in selection among Target stores is amazing to me.  Here is what I picked up.

(click on the picture to enlarge the picture)

I really liked the double-sided word strips.  Four strips come to each package.  They can be used with any dry erase markers or crayons.  I picked up enough for my entire class.

I also picked up two more note pads for the kid to use to write lists in the writing center.

Dollar Spot at Target

This morning I went to Target and hit the dollar spot looking for some great teacher deals and I wasn't disappointed.  Here is what I found:
(click on the picture to see a larger version of the picture)

I really like the name tags.  I found similar ones last year at Target and used them for the first week of school.  There are 12 of two designs in each package so I picked up 2 of each package.

I plan on using the containers for literacy and math center activities.  The note pads are for students to make lists in the writing center.  I am not sure what I am going to use the little alphabet stamps for at this point because they are all uppercase letters.
I hope to go to another Target store in my area tomorrow to find some more great deals!
