Summer is around the corner.....

I only have 13 1/2 teaching days left and I can't believe the amount of stuff I need to get done. All of my reading assessments are complete and I working on my math assessments. I hope to have them completed by the end of next week. I just don't know where the time went this year. Why am I telling you this? I have been trying to post activities regularly but for the next few weeks I probably won't have much time.  As soon as summer rolls around I will definitely post on a regular basis as I am not working this summer :) Well I am working....just not getting paid to create things for the new school year!

Happy Memorial Day!!!!

Word Ladders

My county has a new Kindergarten curriculum.  There have been a few thing I have never had to teach before.   Word ladder are one of these things.  Here are a few activities that I have created for practicing word ladders independently.

Link: Kindergarten Words

This is a simple but effective center for helping students build word.  I took our 25 Kindergarten sight words and divided them in half (minus the words "a" and "I").  I put each letter of each word in a different square.  After laminating and cutting the squares out I take a single hole punch and punch a hole on the left and right side of the letters.  The students then use the links to hook the letters together to make words.  I purchased my links from Lakeshore.
For organizational purposes I color coded one half of the set blue and the other half green.  I also include a matching color coded list of the words in each half.  Then I place the green half in a green bag and the blue half in a blue bag.  I purchased the bags from Walmart for 97 cents each.

I hope this makes sense!

Subtraction Music Video

My class loves this subtraction music video. I couldn't get it out of my head so I thought I would share. Hopefully it doesn't get stuck in your head too!

How Smart!

Part of my alphabet strip has fallen off the wall for the last 3 days.  Today when it came down one of the girls said, "That is ok.  We don't need it anyhow, we already know our alphabet."  What a smart little girl, she is right however there are people coming to observe from our central office and they will be looking for it so I had to explain that I had to put it back up but I totally agreed with her...they don't need it :)  I love the end of Kindergarten.

Pocket Chart Center

There are only 20 1/2 teaching days left in my school year.  My teammates and I have already begun to make some new centers for the fall.  Here are two pocket chart centers I created.  In both centers the students put the words on the chart and then use the letters to build the word.

Too Funny!

Onomatopoeia---What in the world is that?

I guess I missed the day they taught about onomatopoeia in college.  For those of you who also missed that day, in kindergarten terms onomatopoeia is when you write words for sounds.

This can be used for any book you read that includes onomatopoeia.

Come back tomorrow for another onomatopoeia activity!

Seriously?

My missing onomatopoeia post has now reappeared!  I am not sure what is going on but I am happy to see it again.

Here is another onomatopoeia activity to do with your students.  In this activity the students choose an animal.  In the first blank they write the name of the animal.  In the second blanks they write the sound (onomatopoeia) the animal makes.  Finally the draw a picture of the animal.

Hmmm......

I blogged about onomatopoeia on Wednesday. I tried to post the follow up I promised yesterday but Blogger wasn't working. I come home today and my original onomatopoeia post is missing :(
Here is the original activity I posted for onomatopoeia.  It can be used with any book you read that includes them.

Double Dice Addition

I enjoy using dice to teach all kinds of math lessons. A few years back I purchased some double dice but I never got around to figuring out how to use them with Kindergarten students.

Last week I came up with this.  It was a big hit in my classroom and I hope it is the same in yours!
