Pocket Chart Center

I have always struggled with how to store my pocket chart materials.  Recently I found a solution that works for my Kindergarten friends.  I use nylon pencil bags for separating materials (making words, sorts, etc).  I found my nylon pencil bags at Walmart for 97 cents each.  I have also seen them at the dollar store.

Of course the nylon pencil bags don't work if you are writing out poems on sentence strips.  I haven't found a good way for storing those yet.  I found this wonderful hanging storage unit at IKEA.  If I remember correctly it cost 6 or 7 dollars.

It easily holds the nylon pencil bags and any reading sticks the students might like to use.  I picked up silver star reading sticks from the in the party section at Walmart.

Sorting Money

I found these cute plastic piggy banks at the the Dollar Store.  I printed out pictures of coins (penny, nickel, dime) and taped them on one side.  On the opposite side I taped the value of the coins.  I give the students real coins.

Football Anyone?

I found footballs at Dollar Tree.  I created a game just like "Scrambled Eggs".

The boys especially like this scrambled word game.

Here is a copy of the recording sheet and the words I used.  I always color code word scrambles to make it easier to figure out where the letter that falls on the floor goes for both me and the students.  As my Kindergarten team says....work smart, not hard!

Scrambled Eggs!

My students love scrambled eggs.  First I purchased white plastic eggs and write a number on each one (1 to 12).  Next I put the letters of one of our sight words inside each of the eggs.  The words are color coded so if one falls on the floor the students can easily find the egg to which it belongs.

Students choose an egg and remove the letters.  Then they put the letters in order to make a word. Finally on the recording sheet they write the word next to the number on the egg.

Read the Room - Sight Word Tally

I like to use this toward the beginning of the school year.  Students are given 4 or 5 words to read around the room and find.  Each time they see the word they tally it.  It is not only great reading practice but it is also great tallying practice.  Enjoy!

I love 3D shapes

athI'm not sure exactly why but I love teaching students about 3D shapes.  Here are two books I created.  The first book is one I laminate, bind and leave on our book shelf for students to read.  The second book is one the students make and take home.

Non-standard Units of Measurement

I created the to use at a math center. The same paper can be used each day for a week. You will need to provide a different object each day for the students to measure.

Building Words

I love my "Build a Word" literacy center.  I give my students these tiles.  I found mine at Lakeshore Learning however I can't seem to find it now to link it.  If you click on the picture it will take you to where you can find the letter tiles on Amazon.

The students use the letter tiles to build words on the paper below.Build.A.Word

Darkling Beetles

In science we studied the life cycle of a darkling beetles.  As part of our new integrated curriculum I created a life cycle build a word stamping to be used in my stamping center during literacy centers.

Vowel Video

Have you every heard of Vowel Bat? Neither had I until a teammate of mine shared this with me. My class loves this video. It really helps the students grasp the short vowel sounds. Be careful because the tune will get stuck in your head.

Dice Addition

I love using dice for addition games.  The simplest way to use dice for addtion is to supply 2 dice to each child and have them toss the dice.  Students then draw the dots and write the correct number under each square.  Finally they add the dots/numbers together and record the answer.

I love Donorschoose.org!

Donorschoose.org has been a wonderful resource that I have been using for the past year.  During that time I have had $4000 plus worth of projects funded.  Click here to see my current projects.
